For an effective oral presentation you need to draw the public's attention from the first to the last minute. We know that not everyone has the gift of captivating the public, so it is something that has to be worked on.
But how can you be effective in an oral presentation? We present you 20 tips to become an expert in your communications:
1. Choose a minimalist presentation theme - the best designs can also be the simplest ones.
2. Use a consistent and cohesive design theme throughout your presentation.
3. Use an attractive presentation background image - what is the feeling you want to convey to the audience? Tecnologic innovation? New results? Pharmaceutical or food applications? Future vision?
4. Your cover should be your face, stand out.
5. The second slide of your presentation should be an index of what you are going to present. As in a book, people like to know what they can find, and in a presentation, it is important to summarize what will happen.
6. Next, your objective should appear in a simple and clear way, in order to get the public's attention right away.
7. Uses icons - they are the perfect visual elements to include in presentations. They are compact and can transmit a concept to the public in an instante. For instance, a book conveys the idea of “bibliographic research”, a lamp conveys the notion of “an idea”, a tool can symbolize “the technology” they have used or “the solution” founded, and a speech bubble can represent “opinions or future prospects”. You can combine several icons to create personalized illustrations for your slides. You can search for example for “png idea” or “vector idea” on google images to find all kinds of icons you are looking for.
8. Choose a colour scheme that captures the attention (contrasting) - the combination of two colours is ideal, for example black and white, red and white, brown and pink, etc ...
9. Put only keywords in the presentation. If certain words or numbers are important, highlight them.
10. Don't forget that an illustration / image is worth a thousand words. But, use only one graph or diagram per slide - having a lot of information on a slide is the easiest way to lose the audience's focus. Use illustrations instead of photos - it makes the presentation more attractive and creative.
11. Use flowcharts to explain processes and procedures used with keywords and explain orally the choice of each step or why that step was necessary to achieve your final / objective result.
12. Toggle slide layouts to keep the presentation engaging - the change of orientation shows people that the presentation is progressing well. It can help you to make a strong, almost physical distinction between ideas, sections or topics.
13. Relax during the presentation and make a joke or two during it. This creates relaxation in the audience and generates empathy.
14. Keep your presentation ideas light - it is sometimes necessary to move away from professional presentation ideas to get the audience's attention, show casualness and some unconcern with the opinion of the listener, show boldness and confidence. Everything we need to be a successful presentation.
15. If necessary, write your presentation on a paper sheet, try to imagine your speech for each slide, read it out loud and imagine that you are listening to the presentation. Are you clear enough? Will you leave doubts to the public and you are not very clear about certain subjects? Adjust your vocabulary to the audience you will meet, but you will never need to be very professional, just be clear and genuine in your speech!
16. Avoid to use adjusted text in presentations, choose left alignment, which makes reading and design much more fluid.
17. Make your presentation a story, with beginning, middle and end! Create sections in your presentation that show this. Two to three slides for the beginning and end section are necessary, the biggest content should be in the “middle”, but it is important that you also divide this section into subsections to make it lighter and more understandable.
18. In your final section, you must include the main points or conclusions of your work, as well as future perspectives.
19. If your presentation lasts 15 minutes, what is the ideal number of slides? One slide per minute. It is enough to organize and show the essentials without getting lost during the speech.
20. Never forget to add your logo on all slides, as well as number them! This makes it easier for the audience to address questions when they have a question, for example, on slide 7.
