Biotechnology is a highly innovative sector that is expanding worldwide and will take an increasingly prominent role in the industrialized economies. In Europe (EU), modern biotechnology and its applications create almost 2% of the gross value added, being comparable to the major industrial sectors.
In 2016, the Portuguese Association of Bioindustry (P-BIO) characterized the biotechnology sector in Portugal between 2006 and 2014, and compared it with data at European level.

So, what can we conclude?
Between 2006 and 2014, the employment in Biotechnology raised 240% in Portugal (PT), which was higher than the average growth in EU (157%).
However, either the total employment in the Biotechnology sector or the number of Biotechnology companies in EU were considerably higher and increased more over the years than in PT.
Additionally, through the data analysed by P-Bio, several facts were highlighted, including:

So, what can we conclude?
The majority of biotechnologists have a Bachelor’s degree, at least.
Regarding the number of patents, Biotechnology has a more prominent position in Portugal (5th) than in Europe (15h).
Besides several EU countries have greater employability and more Biotech companies than PT, the average turnover per company is also extremely superior in EU.
